The name of this piece is often translated as “Way of Suffering”, describing the crucifixion of Jesus. Phoebe Yeung was inspired to turn this typical religion piece into a 4 octave handbell quartet. The melodic line is clearly shown by R4 with some 4-in-hand technique. The transformation in the bass from ringing to malleting creates the intensity in the chorus followed by the martellato lifts, leading to the climax of the piece. The balance between 4 performers illustrates the sadness of Jesus eventually dying away in tone and speed at the end.
